Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday night.
This follows a dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the CAF playoff final.

The Super Eagles started brightly, taking the lead in the first half after Frank Onyeka’s strike took a deflection and found the net.
However, the advantage was short-lived as Mechak Elia capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, bringing the Leopards level.
With the score locked at 1-1 after 120 tense minutes, the match proceeded to penalties.
Also, Nigeria faltered from the spot, with Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi failing to convert their kicks. DR Congo held their nerve to secure the victory.

The Leopards will now advance to the six-team intercontinental playoff, scheduled from 23 to 31 March 2026, where they will battle for one of the final two slots for next year’s World Cup.
