Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has revealed that she once felt unhappy being African reflecting on a personal journey that shaped her sense of identity and pride in her roots.
Speaking candidly in a recent interview, the award-winning singer shared that growing up abroad made her question her background and feel disconnected from her African heritage.

According to her, societal pressures and lack of representation contributed to those feelings during her younger years.
“I didn’t always feel proud being African,” she explained.
“There was a time when I struggled with my identity. Looking back now, it wasn’t because I didn’t love where I’m from, but because the world didn’t celebrate us the way it does today.”
Tiwa Savage spent her early life in the United Kingdom and later moved to Nigeria to pursue her music career.
She noted that the global rise of Afrobeats helped spark a cultural shift that changed not only her mindset but also the perception of Africa on the international stage.
“As the sound and culture began to receive recognition, I started to truly embrace my roots,” she said. “Today, being African is my biggest pride. I wear it with so much joy.”
The singer emphasised the importance of representation and visibility for young Africans around the world.
She encourages them never to feel inferior or ashamed of their background.
“Seeing African fashion, language, and music celebrated globally has empowered so many of us. I want young Africans to grow up knowing they belong and feeling proud from day one.”
