The French striker scored twice from the penalty spot to seal Real Madrid’s 2–1 victory over Marseille, marking Xabi Alonso’s first Champions League game in charge of the 15-time European champions.

With the brace, Kylian Mbappé moved to 57 goals in the competition, equaling Thomas Müller’s tally and surpassing Van Nistelrooy’s 56.

He achieved the feat in 88 appearances, while Van Nistelrooy needed just 73.

The 26-year-old has made a blistering start to the 2025–26 season, netting six times in five games for Madrid.

Since joining from Paris Saint-Germain, he has scored 50 goals in 64 appearances for Los Blancos, quickly becoming a key figure in the squad.

Real Madrid’s win came despite a turbulent night that saw Trent Alexander-Arnold suffer a hamstring injury and Dani Carvajal sent off.

Mbappé now needs just one more goal to overtake Müller outright and claim sole possession of sixth place on the scoring charts.

Cristiano Ronaldo tops the all-time list with 140 goals, followed by Lionel Messi (129), Robert Lewandowski (105), Karim Benzema (90), and Raúl (71).
