The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a major subsidy on the cost of kidney dialysis in federal hospitals

This is to reduces the financial burden on thousands of patients battling kidney disease.

The new policy, approved by President Bola Tinubu, slashes the price of a single dialysis session from an average of ₦50,000 to a new subsidised rate of ₦12,000 — representing a 76% reduction.

The development was disclosed in a statement on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala,

He explained that the subsidy is part of the president’s commitment to making healthcare more affordable and accessible.

Daniel Bwala noted that the subsidy has already taken effect in several federal hospitals, including the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Ebute-Metta, Lagos, FMC Jabi in Abuja, University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.

Also, FMC Owerri, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), FMC Abeokuta, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), FMC Azare, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

Also, he added that more medical centres and teaching hospitals will be added before the end of the year to widen access nationwide.

He also recalled that in 2024, President Tinubu approved free cesarean sections (C-sections) for pregnant women in federal hospitals.

Furthermore , he describes it as a bold step aimed at boosting maternal healthcare and reducing preventable maternal deaths.

The president’s Renewed Hope Agenda is about ensuring that no Nigerian is denied medical care simply because of cost,” Bwala emphasised.

The subsidy is expected to provide immediate financial relief for patients who require multiple dialysis sessions weekly.

This is to eases the heavy financial strain on families dealing with kidney-related ailments.
