British-Nigerian singer Darkoo has stirred conversations with her bold claim that women are the driving force behind the success and popularity of most songs and genres in today’s music industry.
The Favourite Girl hitmaker explained that much of the music men enjoy is indirectly influenced by women’s tastes.

According to her, songs often blow up because women like them first, and men then gravitate toward those same songs, either to impress women or because the songs have already become trendy among them.
Speaking on the Comfortably Speaking podcast, Darkoo used South Africa’s fast-rising genre, Amapiano, as a prime example.
Also, she argued that the genre’s global appeal skyrocketed after women began posting dance trends to its beats on social media platforms.
“The truth of the matter is, music—and the world in general—is dictated by women,” Darkoo said.
“You play Sexyy Red in your car, why? Because you’re picking up a girl. You want her to hop into your Lamborghini. What are you going to play? Trap, trap in a Brando? No—you’re going to play something she vibes to.”
Darkoo further emphasised that women often set the tone for what becomes cool.
Also, she noted that while some men initially dismissed Amapiano when women first started vibing to it online, the same men now embrace the genre wholeheartedly.
“A lot of music you like is because women like it,” she added.
“Back then, people looked at the girls dancing to Amapiano like they were being weird. But now, everyone is f*cking with it—including men.”
