Just recently, he came out to say that the verification ticks will now cost money.

After that announcement, people expressed their displeasure with it.

New York Times says it would not pay for a verified business account and would only subscribe for a blue tick for journalists finding it essential for their reporting needs.

The Twitter blue tick verification badge was given to accounts that are verified, especially persons that were likely to be impersonated.

This was done so followers and others would know which accounts were the real ones.

However, after Elon Musk bought Twitter, he introduced many changes including gold verification.

Blue And Gold Tick

Mr Musk introduced ‘Twitter Blue’ a verification that could be bought for $8 and would come with the blue verification.

He then announced that the ‘legacy’ blue mark that was given to verified accounts would be removed.

Therefore, users have to pay to be verified or have their verification removed.

To differentiate Twitter blue subscribers from verified companies, Musk introduced gold verification.

The gold check is for news media companies, firms, and charities that had already lost their blue tick.

Twitter had announced that the legacy verification would be removed from April 1.

Also, companies that had the gold tick, were expected to pay a monthly fee of $1,000 in the United States.

There was also an additional $50 for each additional affiliated account.

New York Times

As a result of this development, Twitter removed the gold “verified” marker from the New York Times’ main account.

The New York Times says it would not pay for a verified business account and would only subscribe for a blue tick for journalists who need it for reporting.

On Sunday, New York Times’ main account, with almost 55 million followers, lost its gold check.

Although its affiliate accounts, like its travel and opinion sections, retained the ticks.

In the early hours of Sunday, Mr Musk targeted the New York Times in several tweets, saying, “The real tragedy of @NYTimes is that their propaganda isn’t even interesting”.

He also calls its main feed the “equivalent of diarrhea” and “unreadable.”

Many media groups and personalities have also announced they would not pay for Twitter Blue.
