United States lawmakers have raised concerns over the growing popularity of ChatGPT and they want to seek its regulation.
ChatGPT recently reached 10 million monthly active users and it has proven to be much more than a fad, Reuters says.
Regulatory agencies are seeking the best routes forward for regulatory concerns around the programme.
Last week, ChatGPT’s creators noted the importance of regulation for Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.
In that light, US lawmakers have shown interest in the redevelopment of foundational legislation providing AI with the needed guidelines.
The technology will advance society in incredible ways, House of Representatives Science Committee Democrat, Ted Lieu, says.
However, he fears leaving the AI “unchecked and unregulated” may have severe consequences.
Regulation Solution
According to Reuters, Lieu “introduced a resolution written by ChatGPT that urged congressional focus over AI”.
He noted the need to “ensure that the development and deployment of AI are done in a way that is safe, ethical, and respects the rights and privacy of all Americans and that the benefits of AI are widely distributed and the risks are minimized”.
OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman reportedly visited Capitol Hill to discuss the technology with lawmakers.

An aide to one of the lawmakers revealed that the lawmakers pressed the CEO on the “need to make sure AI does not include biases that would lead to discrimination in the real world, like housing or jobs”.
