Chelsea may still be able to sign Enzo Fernandez on transfer deadline day.
Chelsea are closing in on a deal for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez after making a £105.6m bid, which is the same as the midfielder’s release clause.
The English club has been in talks with Argentina’s World Cup winner until January 2023, but Benfica has refused to do business unless the Blues pay the €120 million (£105.6 million) release clause.
Chelsea had made loan and permanent offers, but the Portuguese club refused to accept anything less than the release clause figure.
The 22-year-old wants to join Chelsea, but he has been training and playing for Benfica since being dropped for one game for an unauthorised trip home to Argentina for a New Year’s Eve party.
If Enzo Fernandez does join Chelsea, he will be the most expensive Premier League signing ever, surpassing Manchester City’s £100 million fee for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish 18 months ago.
