Tension As Gunmen Attack, Bomb Police Station In Anambra

Few days to the February 25 general election, unknown gunmen have continued to attack police stations across Nigeria. 

Could the attacks on police stations be political? This question prods the mind, especially as the Force confirmed its readiness ahead of the 2023 general election.

Recently, three officers of the Nigeria Police Force were killed in broad daylight in the same state by gunmen.

The attack which happened on Saturday was carried out at the Ogidi Police Station in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesman for the police in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the attack to journalists said that the assailants stormed the station on Saturday morning, shooting sporadically.

Patrol Bombs

According to him, three officers of the force were killed in the attack, as the gunmen threw an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and petrol bombs to force their way into the area command.

Also, Ikenga said more security operatives had been deployed to forestall further attacks.

“Anambra State Police Command has reinforced security in the Idemili North area of the State, following the attack on the Ogidi area command in the early hours of today(Saturday), 18/2/2023, where three police operatives paid the supreme price.

“The hoodlums started shooting sporadically on approaching the area command and threw IEDs and petrol bombs, gaining entrance. Unfortunately, the buildings in the police facility were affected.

“However, the Command observed with grave concern the loss of life and valuables as a result of this attack, calls for calm as the police are resolute in depriving these criminal elements of the space, they desire to perpetrate their evil acts and enhance the safety of life and property in the state,” Daily Trust quoted the police spokesman as saying.
