See What Burkina Faso Is Doing To Battle Terrorism

Militant Islamist attacks in Burkina Faso have increased this year with dozens of civilians and soldiers killed every week.

About 40% of Burkina Faso is reportedly no longer controlled by the government.

The Islamic State group has taken credit for a recent ambush that killed 50 soldiers.

As part of plans to fight terrorists in the country, authorities in Burkina Faso have imposed overnight curfews until the end of March in the North region, and the central-eastern Koulpelogo province.

According to AFP, an official in the North region said the move would help the army in areas bordering Mali.

“As part of the fight against terrorism, a curfew from 10:00PM to 5:00AM has been introduced throughout the region from Friday 3 March to Friday 31 March,” a note from the secretary general of the governorate of the northern region, Kouilga Albert Zongo, said.

“During this period, the movement of people, four and two-wheeled vehicles, tricycles, and bicycles is formally prohibited,” he said.

The secretary-general has urged residents “to strictly respect this decision by staying at home at the times and dates indicated.

Previous Methods Put In Place

In mid-February, the curfew imposed in 2019 in the Eastern region, from midnight to 4:00AM was extended for 3 months, until May 21 inclusive.

Burkina Faso prioritised the fight against terrorism particularly after demanding the departure of French troops from Operation Sabre.

Operation Sabre has been present in the West African country since 2009 but was unable to record any success.

On February 24, the authorities terminated the defense agreement signed with French authorities, which allowed the special forces of Operation Sabre to be stationed at the Kamboinsin base.

The soldiers of the Sabre task force may be redeployed to neighbouring Niger, which already has nearly 2,000 French personnel.
