Marvel Studios has announced that Robert Downey Jr., renowned for his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man, will make a high-profile return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Downey will take on the role of Dr Doom, the classic antagonist from the Fantastic Four series, in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday,” scheduled for release in May 2026.
He will also appear in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” set to premiere in May 2027. The Russo brothers, Anthony and Joseph, will direct both films.
Downey, who helped launch the MCU with his performance in 2008’s “Iron Man,” has been a key figure in its success.
His portrayal of Iron Man’s alter ego Tony Stark contributed to the MCU becoming the highest-grossing film franchise ever, earning him substantial financial rewards, including $50 million paydays in turn.
After his character’s death in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” Marvel has faced challenges finding a suitable successor.
Joe Russo praised Downey, stating, “If we’re going to bring Victor Von Doom to the screen — he is one of the more complex characters in all of comics this is potentially one of the more entertaining characters in all of fiction.
“If we’re going to do this then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world.”
