At least nine persons have been confirmed dead, and many others seriously injured during a stampede that occurred at the residence of the former Governor of Sokoto State, Aliyu Wamakko.

Wamakko is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Sokoto North District at the Senate.

The sad incident happened on Thursday night.

On that fateful night, Nigerians in large numbers stormed the Senator’s residence in the Gawon Nama area of the state.

Indeed, many may not have wanted to go there, but hunger, especially the type that has struck the country, pushed them out.

They had gone there with hope of survival but ended up losing their lives in the process.

At the Senator’s house, the situation was not friendly, it was as if the whole state was hungry.

The Struggle

People could not hold their hunger when their eyes had already sighted food.

That was how the struggle began and, in the process, nine residents died.

Also, it was gathered that a volunteer operative of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was among those who died in the incident.

Those who were injured during the incident were taken to hospitals for treatment and are responding to treatments.

Report has it that Wamakko is footing the medical bills.

The spokesperson of the Sokoto Police Command, Ahmed Rufai, spoke on Sunday.

The Growing List

Rufai said an investigation has commenced into the incident.

Furthermore, Rufai said he could not ascertain the exact figure of the casualty toll at the scene of the sad incident.

Meanwhile, the recent incident adds to the growing list of stampedes in the country over the last few months.

Hunger is indeed dealing with Nigerians.

On March 22, three students of Nasarawa State University in Keffi (NSUK) were killed in a stampede that occurred during the distribution of rice donated by the state government.

Some days later, about seven people died in a stampede that occurred during the distribution of zakat (almsgiving exercise) to residents of Bauchi state.
