In a transformative step for Oyo State’s workforce, Governor Seyi Makinde has approved Nigeria’s new minimum wage.
This move is seen as a strong commitment to improving the livelihoods of state employees.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Oyo State chapter, has praised Governor Seyi Makinde for approving the ₦80,000 wage for state workers.
The NLC described the move as a progressive step for improving the welfare of the workforce.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed that the approval followed recommendations from a technical committee set up by the government.
Speaking to journalists in Ibadan, NLC Chairman Kayode Martins commended the governor for his decision.

He highlighted that the increase reflects Makinde’s commitment to the welfare of workers.

“The governor has once again proven himself to be a listening leader and a true trailblazer.
“This is the first time state workers will earn more than their counterparts at the federal level,” Martin’s said
Martins noted that the approved minimum wage is a significant morale booster for workers.
He added that they are committed to reciprocating by increasing productivity.
He also called on members of the government’s negotiation team to show similar generosity in ensuring a fair consequential adjustment.
According to Martins, this will ensure that all employees benefit from the governor’s “milk of human kindness.”
Furthermore, Martins recognised the resilience of workers in the state, who have shown unity and patience throughout the minimum wage review process.
Finally, the NLC leader assured the Makinde-led administration of the continued support and collaboration of labour unions in driving initiatives that promote the well-being of Oyo workers.
