Do you know that the old Naira note palaver is increasingly birthing more fake news in Nigeria?
If you are not careful, you will fall for one of such fake news. Unfortunately, you will end up losing your hard earned money.
One of such rumours is that the use of the old Naira notes has been extended.
Are you aware that the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, recently issued a release that the old 500 and 1000 Naira notes remain legal tender for the next 70 days till May 1, 2023?
She shared the information via her official Instagram handle on Tuesday.
Swiftly reacting to the information, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied knowledge of any such information.
Refuting the news, the CBN explained that the news on Aisha’s page is a ‘’fake news’’ while sharing another release.
After the CBN posted the difference in the two documents, the post on her handle disappeared.
The CBN said: “For the avoidance of doubt, and in line with Mr. President’s broadcast of February 16, 2023, the CBN has been directed to reissue and recirculate only the old 200 Naira notes and this is expected to circulate as legal tender for 60 days up to April 10, 2023″.
Warning the members of the public, the CBN advised Nigerians to disregard the message.
“Members of the public should therefore disregard any message and/or information not formally released by the Central Bank of Nigeria on this subject.
“Media practitioners are advised to please verify any information from the correct sources before publication.”
