Positions like Chief of Staff, Secretary to the State Government and Chief Press Secretary would be filled.

The Supreme Court, in a unanimous Judgment on Tuesday, sacked Emeka Ihedioha of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as Governor, and declared Uzodinma the winner.

It ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue Uzodinma a certificate of return.

A seven-man panel, in its decision, held that Ihedioha did not win the majority of votes cast at the March 9, 2019 governorship election.

The judgment delivered by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, held that the candidate of the APC won on grounds that he polled majority of the lawful votes cast at the election.

The apex court held that the lower court erred in law when it rejected evidence tendered before them to the extent that votes from 388 polling units were not credited to APC and Hope Uzodinma.

Kekere-Ekun said with the result from the 388 polling units, the APC governorship candidate polled majority lawful vote and ought to have been declared winner of the election by INEC.

The judgment set aside the judgment of the Imo election petition tribunal and that of the Court of Appeal both of which had refused to recognise and accept the votes of the 388 polling units as being unlawfully excluded in the general collation.

Uzodinma and APC had in their appeal pleaded with the apex court to review the judgment of the two lower courts against them and restore their victory in the March 9 governorship election.

Earlier, the court struck struck out the appeal against the election of Ihedioha filed by Uche Nwosu the governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in the March 2019 election.

The Justices struck out the appeal following an oral application for withdrawal by counsel to the appeallant, Solomon Umoh SAN.

Nwosu and his party, AA were among three candidates seeking the nullification of Ihedioha’s election on allegations of malpractices and non compliance with the electoral laws during the March 9 governorship election in Imo State.

What Adeyanju said about Uzodinma, Mbaka as S’Court sacks Ihedioha

[ad_1]

Activist, Deji Adeyanju has condemned the Supreme Court ruling which declared Senator hope Uzodinma winner of Imo election.

Advertisements

The apex court had on Tuesday removed Gov Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and declared the All Progressive Congress, APC’s Hope Uzodinma as the Governor of Imo State.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun said 236,000 votes due to Uzodinma and APC from 318 polling units were wrongly excluded and should be added.

Reacting, Adeyanju wondered how APC who came fourth in the governorship election emerged winner even as he mocked Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka.

Mbaka had predicted that Uzodinma will take over from Emeka Ihedioha as Imo Governor in 2020.

According to Adeyanju, the Supreme Court judgment and happenings in the country were only possible in a ‘Zoo’.

“Mbaka, the real man of God.

However, in a press statement forwarded to our correspondent on Wednesday, signed by the Imo APC chairman, Hon.Daniel Nwafor, described the verdict of the apex court as landmark, further assuring an all inclusive government in the state.

According to the statement, “On behalf of the State Working Committee, State Executive Committee and all members of the All Progressives Congress, Imo State, i congratulate the governor of Imo State, His Excellency Senator Hope Odidika Uzodimma on his victory at the Supreme Court, which affirmed him as the duly elected governor of Imo State.

“The Nigerian judiciary has once again shown itself to be the last hope of the common man, and we thank Imolites for their sustained confidence in our great Party while reassuring them that their support will never be in vain.”

Also recall that crisis had enveloped the Imo State Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress(APC) over the outcome of 2018 primaries, which saw Senator Hope Uzodinma defeating ex-Imo Chief of Staff and son-in-law to Senator Rochas Okorocha, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu.

Nwosu, backed by his father-in-law Senator Okorocha, then, as Imo Governor, later picked the ticket of the Action Alliance,AA, to run for March 9, 2019 gubernatorial poll of Imo state.

Amotekun: We won’t allow you turn Yorubaland into war, terrorists’ zone – Yoruba youths tell FG

Following the declaration of ‘Operation Amotekun’, the South West newly inaugurated security outfit as illegal by the federal government, a Yoruba youth group has described the move as an attempt to subject the Yoruba nation to further attacks by bandits and kidnappers.

Advertisements

According to the group, Oodua Youth Coalition, OYC, in a statement issued on Wednesday and made available to DAILY POST, with what is currently going on in the northern part of the country, particularly in the North-East zone, the Yorubas will not allow the South West to degenerate into such terror status.

While stating that the laudable effort of the South West Governors in finding solution to the rampaging menace of bandits and kidnappers in the region is irreversible, the group in the statement signed by its National President, Oluyi Akintade Tayo and Oluwagbenga Ajongbolo, the National Publicity Secretary emphasized that all will be done to ensure that ‘Operation Amotekun’ achieved its purpose.

The statement read, “Oodua Youth Coalition (OYC), a foremost Yoruba youth gathering working to protect, preserve, promote and project the interest of Omoluabi and the norms, culture, dignities, and values of the land, hereby rejects in its entirety the illegal tag placed on the Western Security Network, codenamed ‘Operation Amotekun’ by the Federal government of Nigeria through the Attorney General, Abubakar Malami. We won’t wait till insurgents, kidnappers, highway robbers, ritualists, armed bandits, and other criminals run over us and turn us into refugees in our own land.

“How the Federal Government is very comfortable and unconcerned about the unending crisis in the Northern part of Nigeria remain a mystery and puzzle no one is ready to solve.

“Between 2019 and now, the FG through budgetary allocations and other means has committed over #90billion Nigerian taxpayers funds for the establishment and running of the Northeast Development Commission(NEDC) created to see an end to the economic, social and political ruins the region has been subjected in the hands of Boko Haram, armed bandits, and kidnappers rampaging in those areas.

“According to reports, over 70,000 Nigerians have been killed since 2010 and over 5million displaced and turned to residents of IDP camps scattered across the region. Just days ago, over a dozen soldiers were killed by insurgents with more maimed and injured. While these criminals come for innocent blood, those of our soldiers are not spared.

“Today, lack of access to basic health, water and sanitation, education and even climate action have hampered the progress of the fight against them.

“Is this what Malami or Buhari want? A Yorubaland run over by terrorists? Ondo under Boko Haram? Ekiti praying not to have armed bandits travel through? Oyo where kidnappers hold supreme?

“Operation Amotekun has come to stay in our land. We will do everything to support these brave governors as they work tirelessly to see to a more secure Southwest people and states. We won’t wait till you allow these criminals turn our homes to refugee homes and our schools to IDP camps.”

Imo: Why Supreme Court judgement should be ‘interrogated’ – Mike Ozekhome

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, has reacted to the Supreme Court ruling which declared Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress, APC, winner of the 2019 Imo governorship election.

Advertisements

Ozekhome said analysts should “interrogate” the Supreme Court ruling to decipher if the judgment was delivered in accordance with the law.
Recall that the apex court had on Tuesday declared Uzodinma, who came fourth in the last Imo State election, winner of the poll.
However, Ozekhome wondered why a candidate who came fourth in an election would eventually be declared winner of the poll by the Supreme Court.
He said, “There is ordinarily a presumption by the society that the Supreme Court, being the final court of the land, is supposed to be right in its decisions, after rigorous and painstaking perusal of cases brought before it between feuding parties.
“However, the next stage is for legal pundits, analysts and academicians, to dissect the judgement thoroughly, to decipher if it met the justice of the case, having regard to the available facts. I do not have these facts, not being one of the counsels in the appeal. They must interrogate whether the judgement actually delivered justice according to law.
“After all, law is but a handmaid instituted by man to deliver justice. The two are siamese twins. One without the other is bare and vacuous. One area that needs critical analysis and interrogation is what makes a candidate that came 4th in an election to be declared the winner of that election.
“Another area that requires an urgent answer is why INEC has failed the nation that presidents and governors are now being packaged and delivered for the country and states, against the clear choice of the electorate at the polls.

“If INEC got its acts right, the judiciary’s frequent interventions would have been greatly minimised. Today, INEC is neither independent, impartial, nor well equipped to count the electorate’s votes and also allow such votes to count. That is the sorry state we are in today, especially since 2015. May God help Nigeria.”
