Labour Party Makes Moves To Reconcile Party Members In Cross River

In elections held in the past, the Labour Party (LP) had just been another small party that struggled to gather votes.

However, this changed in 2022 when former Anambra state governor Peter Obi cross carpeted to LP.

Obi once contested with the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

He left the party only two weeks before the presidential primary election in the PDP.

Mr Obi then picked up the presidency form of the LP and brought fame to the party.

LP Rise To Fame

With an increase in youth participation in politics, Mr Obi managed to win their trust and get their support.

This led to a tight race for the presidential seat as the LP candidate managed to come in third place in the election.

Although Mr Obi got the support of the youths, it was not enough to make him win against Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, Mr Obi’s fame brought positive results to the party, making the party candidates top contenders for many positions across Nigeria.

For instance, The LP candidate, Alex Otti, won the gubernatorial election in Abia state.

Party Problems

The Labour Party in some states have been having internal issues.

Cross River is one of such states.

In this light, the State Chapter of the party has constituted a reconciliation and disciplinary committee to resolve its internal disputes.

This was revealed by the Chairperson of LP in the state, Ogar Osim, in Calabar.

Before the March 18 governorship election in the state, some dissatisfied party faithful had endorsed the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Sandy Onor.

Even as the party had its governorship candidate Mr Osim who is also the party chairperson in the state.

“It has become exigent to constitute a reconciliation and disciplinary committee to mediate and reconcile all parties concerned.

“The mandate of this committee is with immediate effect, as the need to restore peace and unity in our party cannot further be delayed,” says Osim.

The 13-member committee has representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress as members.
