Kylian Mbappe is set to become one of Europe’s youngest club owners at 25, with reports suggesting he is closing in on a £17m deal to buy French second division side SM Caen.
The Real Madrid star, who left Paris Saint-Germain this summer, is expected to retain an interest in French domestic football through this ownership.
Talks have been ongoing for several weeks, with an agreement expected to be concluded soon.
Mbappe would buy out American investment fund Oaktree Capital, which currently holds an 80% stake in the club.
He would become the majority shareholder, with Pierre Antoine Capton retaining his 20% stake.
Mbappe plans to maintain the club’s identity, focusing on developing young players. He has a personal connection to Caen, having almost joined the club as a 13-year-old before they were relegated.
His family has retained a good relationship with Caen, leading to this deal being pursued. Ziad Hammoud is reportedly set to be appointed president of the club when the takeover is completed.
