Atletico Madrid missed a penalty in stoppage time in their 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen, a result that sees both teams crash out of the Champions League.
Porto was relieved to see the draw because it meant they would go to the knockout stage of the tournament in February following their 4-0 victory against Club Brugge earlier in the day. However, they had to wait after a wild game at the Metropolitano.
Diego Simeone’s side spurned the chance to win the match when Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky saved Yannick Carrasco’s spot kick before Saul Niguez’s follow up strike hit the crossbar.
For just the second time in the past ten years, Atletico Madrid leaves the Champions League at the group stage without a victory in any of their previous three games.
Leverkusen forward Adam Hlozek set up Moussa Diaby, who scored in September’s 2-0 home win over Atletico, for the France winger to blast a shot from a tight angle into the far top corner and put the visitors ahead in the ninth minute.
VAR spotted a Leverkusen handball in the box from an Atletico corner in the final play of the game, leaving Leverkusen players in utter disbelief when the referee awarded a penalty.
Yannick Carrasco took the resulting penalty in the 99th minute, only for Finnish keeper Lukas Hradecky to block the shot. It rebounded to Saul Niguez, who headed the ball into the crossbar.

It then rebounded to another Atletico player, Reinildo Mandava, whose shot was destined for the bottom corner – but hit the back of Carrasco and rebounded over the goal.
