After the numerous dramas that trailed the arrest of the embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, many had concluded that Emefiele would surely rot in jail or perhaps pay for his ‘crimes’.
In fact, the circumstances surrounding his arrest and detention, which came shortly after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, were enough to make many conclude that indeed Emefiele had ‘wrong’ Nigerians.
But as Falz rightly said in one of his songs, “This is Nigeria”, here things never go as planned, especially when it involves politicians.
Emefiele’s Bail
Now, on Wednesday, in Maitama, Abuja, a Federal High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has granted the Emefiele bail, leaving many perplexed with the ruling.
Emefiele was granted bail by Justice Olukayode Adeniyi.
Justice Adeniyi ordered the federal government to release Emefiele to his lawyers.
He also instructed lawyers for the former CBN Governor to deposit his passport in court.
He however instructed his lawyers to produce him in court on November 15.
More Charges
That is when he is scheduled to be arraigned before another judge of the High Court of the FCT in a charge earlier filed by the EFCC against him and one other person.
Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following a court order produced Emefiele in court on Wednesday.
Emefiele, who has been in the custody of Security agencies for over 149 days, was brought to court by operatives of the EFCC.
Dressed in yellow native attire and a cap, the former CBN Governor was led into the courtroom at about 12:30 pm.
Emefiele was first detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) on 10 June a day after he was removed from office by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and later transferred to the EFCC.
