For years, the Niger Delta has faced its share of challenges especially disputes over land, resources, and identity that often turn into conflict.
As a result, when there was an issue between the military and a community in Delta State, many Nigerians took it in good faith and moved on.
Not many were aware that a different story will follow months after that crisis at Okuama.
These are not just news stories; they’re real experiences for the people living in Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
The military often steps in to keep the peace, but sometimes their actions raise tough questions about fairness and accountability.
When things go wrong, entire communities feel the impact.
Tragedy In Okuama Community
In Okuama Community, tragedy struck in March 14, 2024, when 17 soldiers were killed during a peace mission to settle a dispute.
Following that incident, the military arrested several community leaders.
Sadly, two of them — Pa James Oghoroko and 81-year-old Dennis Okugbaye — died while in custody.
Their deaths have left the community in shock and demanding answers.
Now, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has ordered a full investigation into what happened.

Detained Okuama Community Leaders
The military detained Oghoroko, Okugbaye, and four others — Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo, Chief Belvis Adogbo, Mrs. Mabel Owhemu, and Mr. Dennis Malaka — during a military operation from August 18 to 20, 2024.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the military spokesperson, spoke about the investigation during a recent briefing.
CDS Statement
He said: “The Chief of Defence Staff immediately asked the 6th Division to investigate these claims. We expect to know the truth very soon”.
“We are committed to getting to the bottom of this, and by tomorrow, we should have more details.”
Now, everyone is waiting to hear what the investigation reveals.
The hope is for clear answers and justice for the community.
