Brixton 02 Academy Licence Suspended After Crush At Asake Show

The licence of Brixton 02 Academy has been suspended following a crush at Nigerian Singer, Asake’s concert.

The concert which took place on Thursday was cut short when about 3,000 fans without tickets tried to enter the foyer.

Two women have died from injuries sustained during the crush and another is in critical condition in the hospital.

The venue’s licence has been suspended till January 16, 2023, causing all shows to be rescheduled.

During a council meeting, the Metropolitan Police stated that there had been a similar crush at the same venue on February 4, 2020, during Nigerian singer, Naira Marley’s concert.

The police requested that the licence be suspended through the investigation period, the owners, however, decided to close down for 28 days.

A lawyer representing the police, Gerald Goirier said the offer by the owner was “inappropriate and wrong”.

“It is not right, I suggest, to leave a decision as serious as this one in the hand of the licensee,” he said.

“Whilst what happened last Thursday of course was exceptional, no one should begin to think that it was unique or could not happen again,” he added.
