Nigerians may never have to watch the proceedings of the Presidential Election Petition Court holding in Abuja. This is because the Tribunal has turned down Atiku Abubakar’s request to make the proceeding get to Nigerians in their homes live.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Atiku Abubakar had request for permission to broadcast the court proceedings live so that Nigerians can adequately follow the petition.

The appeal filed by the displeased parties and candidates of the PDP and the Labour Party was rejected by the five-person panel. It was chaired by Justice Haruna Tsammani, as being without merit.

According to the court, permitting cameras in courtrooms is a significant judicial policy that needs to be protected by the legislation.

However, the decision states that no legislative or policy basis allowed it to grant the application.

“The court can only operate and be directed by the practise guidelines and rules that have been authorised by the Court of Appeal President.

“We cannot permit a situation that may lead to dramatisation of our proceedings,” Justice Tsammani said.

Furthermore, the court held that the request was not part of any relief sought by the petitioners and had no bearing on it.

It said that the request for a live broadcast would not add to the determination of the petitions.

Furthermore, the court held that the petitioners failed to establish how the live broadcast of the proceedings would advance their case.
