Former Accountant General of Cross River State, Rose Bassey, and three others have reportedly been kidnapped by some unknown gunmen while travelling along the Uyanga-Ikomita axis of the Calabar-Ikom Highway.

According to reports, the kidnappers halted motor movement on the road with sporadic shootings on the highway during the operation.

iBrandtv gathered that a popular cleric in the state, Evangelist Edim Edim Omin, was also shot at but luckily escaped with bullet wounds and was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Bassey, who served under Donald Duke’s administration was reportedly in the company of her driver when she was abducted at about 5:00 pm yesterday on her way back from her farm at Ekpri Iko after Iwuru in Biase Local Government Area of the state.

Earlier, the state police Command said it had deployed tactical teams, including the Anti-Cultism and Kidnapping Squad, to that axis of the highway to safeguard motorists and commuters plying the highway.

It was confirmed on Wednesday that various security agents were present on the road, including Anti Kidnapping Squad, Operation Akpakwu, operation Sting, and Operation Restore peace stationed at different points on the road.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident to newsmen, noting that the command is working to see that the four abducted persons were released unharmed.

She reiterated that the Command is working to see that normalcy return to that highway axis.

“It is a sad reality for us and as I speak with you, the Commissioner of Police is heading to that axis to access situation of things himself,” she stated.
