President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.

He is also expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast to commemorate the historic occasion.
Government Unveils Official Celebration Plan
The announcement was made in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
The disclosure was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga.
Akume made the announcement during the inauguration of an inter-ministerial committee tasked with coordinating all June 12 activities.
Countdown Begins as Committee Takes Off
Speaking at the event held at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, Akume urged committee members to begin work immediately, noting that only days remain before the national celebration.
He stressed the importance of early planning and strict coordination to ensure a smooth commemoration.
Week-Long Line-Up of Democracy Day Events
The Federal Government has outlined a series of activities leading up to June 12.
The programme begins with a World Press Conference scheduled for June 4.
This will be followed by special Juma’at prayers on June 5 and an inter-denominational church service on June 7.
A public lecture on democracy will hold on June 9, while youth and women-focused engagements are scheduled for June 10.
June 12: Key National Events
The celebration will climax on June 12 with President Tinubu’s address to a joint session of the National Assembly.
A presidential nationwide broadcast will follow, alongside a Democracy Day gala night.
The events are expected to highlight Nigeria’s democratic journey and ongoing governance reforms.
Government Promises a Modest Celebration
Akume noted that this year’s commemoration would be relatively modest due to prevailing national conditions and the administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.
Despite the scaled-down approach, officials say the significance of the day remains unchanged.
Honouring June 12 Heroes
The SGF also paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, widely regarded as the symbol of the June 12, 1993 presidential election struggle.
He described Abiola’s sacrifice as the foundation upon which Nigeria’s current democratic system is built.
Inter-Ministerial Committee Mobilised
An inter-ministerial committee chaired by Akume has been set up to oversee all preparations.
Members include key ministers such as those of information, interior, finance, defence, health, foreign affairs, and budget and economic planning.

Also included are the National Security Adviser, Inspector-General of Police, DSS Director-General, presidential aides and top government officials.
Focus on Coordination and Documentation
The committee has been mandated to plan, organise and execute all approved activities for Democracy Day.
It will also document the events for historical records and engage relevant stakeholders where necessary.
Akume further directed all subcommittee heads to submit their budgets promptly to ensure smooth execution of the programme.
A Symbolic Moment for Nigeria’s Democracy
As preparations intensify, the June 12 anniversary is expected to serve as both a reflection of Nigeria’s democratic journey and a platform for the Tinubu administration to highlight governance reforms and institutional progress.
