A South African group, Progressive Forces, has launched a petition calling for the disqualification of Chidimma Adetshina from participating in Miss Universe 2024.
She recently arrived in Mexico to represent her country at the international event scheduled for November.
However, her participation has sparked controversy among certain South African groups who argue that her entry undermines the integrity of the Miss Universe pageant.
Chidimma Adetshina initially faced criticism in South Africa during her entry for the Miss South Africa contest.
She later withdrew amid allegations of identity fraud involving her mother.
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) in South Africa reported that preliminary evidence indicated Adetshina’s mother had committed fraud and identity theft.
Following these developments, Adetshina withdrew from Miss South Africa.
Also, she participated in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, where she emerged as the winner.
In their petition, Progressive Forces claim that Adetshina’s inclusion in the pageant could potentially harm the Miss Universe brand.
Within 24 hours of its launch, the petition garnered over 1,000 signatures.
The group’s statement read: “We are deeply concerned about Chidimma Adetshina, Miss Universe Nigeria, whose mother has been implicated in serious identity fraud”
“On the 29th of October, the South African Home Affairs officially cancelled the identities of Chidimma Adetshina and her mother by court order”
