Eight teenage girls in Toronto have been charged with the murder of a 59-year-old homeless man.

The girls between the age range 13 and 16 are being accused of stabbing the man in what was described as “a swarming” on Sunday.

The unidentified man had been living in a shelter for the homeless when he was attacked.

According to Toronto Police Detective, Sergeant Terry Browne, bystanders had alerted emergency services after finding the man with stab wounds around midnight.

The victim died from stab wounds in the hospital.

The girls who had met on social media were arrested near the scene with several weapons and three of them have had previous contact with the police.

“We don’t know how or why they met on that evening and why that destination was downtown Toronto,” the detective said.

The Mayor of Toronto, Mayor John Tory said he was “deeply disturbed” by the case.

“I am extremely troubled by the young age of those accused and by the number of people allegedly involved in this murder,” he said.
