Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to reject leaders he describes as ineffective and disconnected from the struggles of ordinary citizens.
In a recent post on his 𝕏 account, Obi reacted to comments made by President Bola Tinubu during a visit to Jos, Plateau State.
According to reports, Tinubu expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of electricity at the Jos airport, noting that it contributed to his brief stay.
Obi seized on the remark as a reflection of broader issues in Nigeria’s power sector.
He pointed out that during the 2023 election campaign, Tinubu had pledged to deliver stable electricity within four years, adding that Nigerians should not support him for a second term if he failed to meet that goal.
The former Anambra State governor argued that current realities suggest a decline rather than progress.
He noted that electricity generation, which was above 4,000 megawatts in 2023, now averages below that level, even as consumers face increased tariffs.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s low electricity consumption per capita, stating that it remains significantly below the African average.
Obi further criticised what he described as a disconnect between leadership and the lived experiences of citizens.

He contrasted the President’s quick departure from the airport—reportedly influenced by the power outage—with the prolonged hardship many Nigerians endure daily without reliable electricity.
He concluded by urging citizens to become more discerning in their choices, emphasising the need to support leaders who demonstrate competence, empathy, and a genuine commitment to improving living conditions rather than those who make unfulfilled promises.
