Guinea-Bissau plunged into crisis on Wednesday when the military seized power, prompting swift action from ECOWAS.
Immediately, the West African bloc suspended the country from all decision-making bodies.

Guinea-Bissau Faces Military Takeover
Following an extraordinary virtual meeting, the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, chaired by Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, condemned the takeover as illegal.
Bio warned that West Africa cannot allow leaders to abort a democratic process.
ECOWAS Demands Democratic Restoration
He emphasised that the people of Guinea-Bissau had shown courage and commitment by voting on November 23, and they deserved full protection.
Consequently, ECOWAS voiced deep concern over the crisis and praised citizens’ resilience during the elections.
The Council rejected the “coup d’état of November 26, 2025” and warned against any attempts to legitimise it.

It demanded that the military immediately allow the National Electoral Commission to release the official results.
Additionally, the Council insisted on the unconditional release of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, electoral staff, and other political figures.
Regional Response And Security Measures
Furthermore, the bloc reminded the armed forces to protect citizens and safeguard public and private property.
ECOWAS raised alarm over the safety of its personnel and international observers, urging the military to guarantee protection and facilitate safe evacuation if needed.
To resolve the crisis, ECOWAS will send a high-level mission led by its Chair and regional leaders, including Togo’s President, Cabo Verde’s President, Senegal’s President, and ECOWAS Commission President.
Meanwhile, the Council instructed the Stabilisation Support Mission to continue defending national institutions and warned it may impose sanctions on anyone undermining democracy.
ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to Guinea-Bissau’s people and the region’s democratic stability.
