Nigerian singer Wizkid has stirred controversy after asserting that he had no blueprint while rising in the music industry.

This is despite having launched his career under Banky W’s renowned record label.

‘I Built My Own Structure’ — Wizkid’s Comment Stirs Backlash Online

The Ojuelegba hitmaker made the remark in a snippet from his forthcoming HBO documentary, Long Live Lagos.

He stated, “There was no blueprint for me, I had to build a structure for myself.”

His comment, however, immediately triggered debate on social media.

Many argues that it not only downplayed Banky W’s instrumental role in his early success, but also overlooked the legendary Nigerian musicians who paved the way for today’s stars.

Elsewhere in the documentary, Wizkid admitted that Fela Kuti inspired his musical journey.

He stated, “Fela Kuti was instrumental to why I believe I could really make music.”

One user recalled vividly when Banky W publicly introduced Wizkid as a rising star.

He expresses disappointment that the artist now appears to dismiss that early support.

Another commenter accused Wizkid of attempting to rewrite history by downplaying the role Banky W and EME played in shaping his early career.

He noted that he was brought straight from school into the studio before rising to fame.

A different user argued that while Wizkid did introduce a distinct sound, image, and style that set him apart, people might be misunderstanding the context of his statement.

According to the commenter, the point may have been about artistic evolution rather than mentorship.

Someone else suggested that the backlash was unnecessary.

He said the artiste likely referred to developing his unique musical identity rather than denying Banky W’s influence.
