Femi Kuti Reveals Secret to Longevity in Music

The 63-year-old legend, who has remained a force in the industry for over four decades, made this revelation during a recent episode of the Afropolitan Podcast.

According to him, many young artistes focus too much on chasing hit songs instead of mastering their craft and building a lasting legacy.

Kuti urged emerging musicians to humble themselves and learn the art of making “proper music,” warning that fame built on shallow foundations fades with age.

“When the head is not correct, nothing can be correct,” he said. “I like what young artists are doing, but what would they do when they are 50? You might make two or three hit songs, but when you’re older, what happens next?”

He emphasised that his enduring career stems from discipline, consistency, and genuine musicianship.

“If I pick up my sax, you’ll know I’m working. I composed everything. Music is like medicine. The likes of Miles Davis and Stevie Wonder are respected because they work hard and keep practicing,” Kuti explained.

The Afrobeat veteran noted that his music continues to resonate across generations, as fans often introduce his songs to their children and grandchildren.

“I can proudly tell you I’m still touring. People who have followed me for 15 or 20 years still bring my albums for me to sign. That’s because I have something to offer,” he added.

Femi Kuti concluded by advising young musicians to focus on creating lasting art rather than quick fame, warning, “If you’re not writing your music and you’re buying it, would you still be jumping at 40?”
