Nigerian Afrobeats star Adekunle Gold has revealed that he still experiences sickle cell crises despite decades of treatment.
He emphasises the importance of genotype awareness and proper care.

In a newly shared interview, the 38-year-old singer spoke candidly about his ongoing battle with sickle cell anaemia, describing the painful episodes he continues to endure.
“I still have crises,” he said.
He recalls that he has been on lifelong medication since childhood after being diagnosed at about age five.
Adekunle Gold explained that growing up, he frequently fell ill with severe joint, leg and stomach pain
This is the symptoms that later led to his diagnosis.
He remembered a moment from childhood when his mother carried him on her back to the hospital because of intense pain, where doctors informed him he would take medication like folic acid and B-complex for life.
The singer urged Nigerians to prioritise genotype testing.
He stresses that sickle cell disease can be prevented when individuals avoid SS-SS pairings.
“Knowing your genotype is very important. The point is to not bring many more kids that have sickle cell,” he noted.
He added that he plans to use his platform to raise awareness as many organisations are not doing enough.
Although he still has crises occasionally, Adekunle Gold says they are now milder due to better self-care and access to resources.
“I’m grateful to God for the resources to take care of myself more properly,” he added.
