Veteran Nigerian comedian and actor, Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, widely known as Alibaba, has opened up about his stance on polygamy
He explains that he supports the practice for both cultural and practical reasons.

In an interview with media personality Nedu, Alibaba stated that polygamy, when handled properly, can promote stability, understanding, and cooperation among spouses.
“Some people believe that when you have only one wife, you may not be able to control the wife. But when she knows there’s another woman in the picture, she will calm down because she knows that once she misbehaves, another one is available,” the comedian said.
Recalling traditional customs in Ibadan, Alibaba noted that some women in the past even encouraged their husbands to take additional wives to prevent infidelity and maintain peace at home.
“I know of a woman in Ibadan who supported her husband to be a polygamist. Back then, some women married young girls and gave them to their husbands because they didn’t want their men having concubines,” he explained.
He further revealed that polygamy often evolved out of necessity rather than desire.
He cited instances where a man’s widow was remarried within the family to ensure protection and support.
“When a man dies, and his wife is still young or has little children, the family may call the brothers and say, which of you can take care of this girl. That’s also part of how polygamy evolved,” he said.
While acknowledging that the concept of polygamy remains controversial in modern society, Alibaba insisted that it continues to serve an important social and cultural role in many communities.
