The music world is mourning the loss of one of its most soulful voices as Michael Eugene Archer, popularly known as D’Angelo, has passed away at the age of 51.

According to confirmation from his former manager, Kedar Massenberg, and sources close to his family, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter died Tuesday morning, October 14, 2025, in New York after a private battle with pancreatic cancer.

D’Angelo rose to fame in the mid-1990s as a defining voice of the neo-soul movement, blending R&B, funk, and gospel influences with his distinctive sound and style.

His debut album, Brown Sugar (1995), became a genre-defining masterpiece, earning critical acclaim and commercial success.

Songs like Brown Sugar, Lady, and Cruisin’ introduced audiences to his rich, soulful delivery and timeless production.

He solidified his legendary status with the release of Voodoo (2000), which featured the iconic single Untitled (How Does It Feel) a song that not only showcased his artistry but also became a cultural touchstone for a generation.

Throughout his career, D’Angelo was celebrated for his musical authenticity, vulnerability, and deep connection to Black artistry and spirituality.

Despite long breaks between projects, his influence remained profound, inspiring a new wave of R&B and soul artistes who looked up to his raw emotion and uncompromising creativity.
