Jigawa State is taking a decisive step towards energy independence.

In late August or early September, Governor Umar Namadi will commission the state’s first solar-hybrid mini-grid in Kafin Hausa, and at the same event, he will break ground on another in Hadejia.

In late August or early September, Governor Umar Namadi will commission the state’s first solar-hybrid mini-grid in Kafin Hausa.

Bold Public-Private Push

Future Energies Africa (FEA), together with Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and Bagaja Renewables, is driving both projects.

These developments represent the first fruits of Jigawa’s decision to invest directly in electricity distribution.

Reliable Power, Real Impact

For years, unreliable supply and costly petrol and diesel generators drained local businesses and frustrated households.

Now, the new 1MW solar-hybrid mini-grid in Kafin Hausa will deliver steady electricity to homes, traders, schools and clinics.

Meanwhile, a similar project in Hadejia will quickly follow, marking the start of an ambitious plan to install 10MW of mini-grids across Jigawa’s towns, including Ringim, Kazaure, Dutse and Gumel.

Setting A National Example

FEA’s Managing Director, Yusuf Yahaya, praised the State Government’s foresight and declared: “These mini-grid projects will not only bring reliable electricity but also unlock new economic opportunities and improve quality of life for thousands.”

Moreover, energy experts emphasise that Jigawa’s model—combining equity in a distribution company with targeted renewable mini-grids—sets a powerful national precedent.

By blending public and private investment, the state shows how leaders can expand power access both quickly and sustainably.

In Kafin Hausa’s central market, traders already voice optimism.

They believe lower running costs will boost profits and create new jobs.

Likewise, schools and health centres expect more dependable services.

Therefore, for Jigawa, this milestone signals more than a technical achievement.

It demonstrates intent: the state aims to light up its towns and prove that reliable power can fuel development from the ground up.
