NCAA Probes Ibom Air Flight Disruption, Meets Witnesses

A new voice has entered the Ibom Air controversy — a passenger seated beside the woman at the centre of the storm.

His account, now in the hands of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, could shift the narrative as regulators prepare to meet the airline and witnesses over the much-debated flight disruption.

A new voice has entered the Ibom Air controversy — a passenger seated beside the woman at the centre of the storm.

It began, the airline explains, when a crew member asked passenger Comfort Emmanson to switch off her mobile phone before take-off.

Instead of complying, she refused — and within moments, the situation escalated.

She assaulted a flight attendant and confronted airport security, while fellow passengers recorded the chaos.

Swift And Severe Punishments

By the next morning, the footage dominated social media, sparking fierce debates on passenger conduct and airline responsibility.

Reacting swiftly, Ibom Air banned Emmanson from all its flights.

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) went further; they placed her on a lifetime “no-fly” list and described her behaviour as one of the most severe cases of unruly conduct this year.

Authorities charged her in court and sent her to Kirikiri correctional facility.

Witness Steps Forward

However, the case took a new turn on Wednesday.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority’s (NCAA) director of public affairs and consumer protection, Michael Achimugu, announced that a breakthrough witness had stepped forward — the passenger who sat right next to Emmanson during the incident.

“Some aspects of his testimony offer an opportunity to look at other perspectives,” Achimugu revealed in a post on X, pointing to questions about how others handled the situation before the aircraft even left the ground.

While the witness plans to release his own statement, the NCAA has already issued a Letter of Investigation to Ibom Air.

Achimugu confirmed that the Authority will invite both the airline and eyewitnesses to a formal review meeting.

He emphasised that the Authority, alongside the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, consistently protects the rights of all stakeholders.

“One is glad that a truly verifiable witness has come forward,” he said, warning the public to ignore the “fake audios and claims” flooding social media.

A Surprising Turn Of Events

Later that day, Achimugu reiterated that Minister Festus Keyamo’s earlier press release still stands.

He also explained that every detail gathered from witnesses and investigations will help identify and close gaps in the system.

Then, in an unexpected twist, Keyamo announced that Emmanson will walk free this week.

He also confirmed that the AON agreed to lift her lifetime ban.

What began as a confrontation before the flight even left the runway has now evolved into a test case of how Nigeria’s aviation sector handles conflict, public outrage, and second chances.
