2024 Paris Paralympics Closes With Two World Records Set

The Paris 2024 Paralympic games have come to an end. The games showcased the talents of over 4,000 athletes from around the world.

The games featured 22 sports and 549 medal events, with a total of 1,645 medals awarded.

China dominated the medal table, winning an impressive 231 medals, including 124 gold medals, 73 silver medals, and 34 bronze medals.

Great Britain followed closely, securing 124 medals, comprising 41 gold medals, 45 silver medals, and 38 bronze medals.

The United States finished third, winning 114 medals, including 37 gold medals, 40 silver medals, and 37 bronze medals.

Nigeria finished 40th in the overall medal table with a total haul of seven medals, including two gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.

Nigerian athletes made their mark on the games, with standout performances including Onyinyechi Mark, who shattered the Paralympic record in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category with a lift of 145kg.

Folashade Oluwafemiayo won gold in the women’s over 86kg powerlifting category, while Bose Omolayo secured silver in the women’s up to 79kg Para-powerlifting category with a lift of 145kg.

Nigerian successes included Flora Ugwunwa, who won silver in the Women’s Javelin F54 category with a throw of 19.26m, and Esther Nworgu, who claimed silver in the Powerlifting Women’s up to 41 kg category.

Isau Ogunkunle made history by becoming the first Nigerian player to secure an individual medal in Para Table Tennis since the Sydney 2000 Games, winning bronze in the Men’s Singles Class 4 event.

The next Paralympic Games will be held in  Los Angeles, California, in 2028.
