Why Electricity Was Rationed

In December 2022, Energy Minister Peter Kapala announced the rationing of electricity supply to domestic customers.

This became a necessity owing to a big drop in the water level in lake Kariba.

The drop was said to have been a result of reduced inflows from the Zambezi river and its tributaries.

Lake Kariba is used to generate power for both Zimbabwe and Zambia.

“The low water level situation in lake Kariba threatens the power generation from both the Karina North Bank Hydropower station and Karina South Bank Hydropower station,” the minister said.

Furthermore, the Minister proposed that rationing translates to supplying domestic customers with six hours of power daily.
