In the heart of Anambra State, Nnamdi Azikiwe University has been rocked by controversy over a series of administrative decisions that have left the university community divided.
It all began with the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bernard Odoh, a decision that quickly became the focal point of tension between the university’s Senate and its Governing Council.
What seemed like a routine appointment soon spiraled into a larger dispute, drawing attention to allegations of misconduct and a breakdown of governance.
As pressure mounted, it became clear that the matter was far from settled, prompting action from the highest levels of government.

The decision, announced on Wednesday, follows reports that the council’s appointment of Odoh had violated university laws, sparking tension across the institution.
According to a statement from the Presidency, the decision came after “the chairman of the governing council unilaterally appointed a Vice-Chancellor who did not meet the minimum eligibility criteria for the position.”
In a related move, Tinubu also approved the removal of Ohieku Salami as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo.
The Ministry of Education’s involvement further emphasised the government’s commitment to restoring order and accountability.
As a result, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated that “urgent measures are needed to prevent further deterioration of the situation at Nnamdi Azikiwe University”.
This bold action, therefore, raises important questions about the future direction of the university and its leadership.
