She shared that her early passion for the genre led her to mimic Lil Wayne, with whom she became fascinated through tracks like Mrs. Officer, Mr. Carter, Comfortable, and Hustle Music.

“My brother is the one who introduced me to rap because he used to listen to a lot of it… That’s how I got the influences,” Tems explained.

She revealed that her admiration for Lil Wayne sparked a childhood habit of pretending to be the rapper, a memory she looks back on fondly but admits feels “a little cringy” today.

While the Oscar-nominated singer has yet to meet Lil Wayne, she expressed excitement about a possible encounter. Her appreciation for hip-hop shines through in her debut album, Born In The Wild, which includes the rap-inspired track T Unit.

She also collaborated with Grammy-winning rapper J Cole on Free Fall, further showcasing her connection to the genre.

Tems has previously joined forces with prominent rappers such as Future on the Grammy-winning single Wait For U, and with Drake on Fountain from his Certified Lover Boy album.
