TCN Condemns Rising Incidents Of Infrastructure Vandalism

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is worried about the rising wave of vandalism affecting transmission infrastructure across Nigeria.

Between January 9 and January 14, 2025, vandals damaged over 18 transmission towers in Rivers, Abia, and Kano States, severely threatening the country’s power supply.

TCN Condemn Vandalism

On January 10, TCN linesmen discovered significant damage to towers 171 through 181 and tower 184 in Rivers State.

Then, on January 14, vandals targeted towers 146, 147, and 149 along the Owerri/Ahoada 132kV line, removing base brackets and compromising the stability of these structures.

Similarly, on January 13 in Abia, thieves stole bolts, nuts, and other parts from towers 160 to 162 along the Alaoji/Umuahia 132kV line, which they had been repairing.

Moreover, on January 9 in Kano, vandals caused critical damage to towers 105, 106, and 107 along the Katsina-Gazoua 132/33kV line, threatening their structural integrity.

The situation escalated on January 17 when TCN engineers discovered that vandals had damaged underground 132kV cables near Millennium Park in Abuja.

As a result, the attack disrupted the power supply to the central area of the city and its surrounding areas.

In response, TCN has bolstered its security measures, increased patrols, and intensified cooperation with security forces.

However, the company is now appealing to all Nigerians for support.

“The transmission network is a national asset,” TCN emphasised.

“It is crucial for our socio-economic development, and we must all work together to protect it for the future of the country.”

Meanwhile, when the hardship triggered by the removal of petrol subsidy and devaluation of the naira began, there were projections that crime rate would increase.

Could this be as a result of the level of hunger that the economic reform of President Bola Tinubu had come with?
