The battle between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) does not seem to be winding down.

However, the Nigerian government said it would not be able to evacuate Nigerians trapped in Sudan.

The RSF leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and the SAF leader, General Fattah al-Burhan are fighting over how Sudan should be run.

Neither of them seems willing to give in to the other.

Therefore, many countries have been making moves to evacuate their citizens in Sudan.

However, the Nigerian government said it would not be able to evacuate Nigerians trapped in Sudan.

This is due to the risks involved in flight operations in the country.

The Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made this disclosure.

However, her disclosure was met with disapproval from many Nigerians including Labour Party’s Peter Obi.

Mr. Obi, the LP Presidential Candidate emphasised that it was the duty of the government to secure the evacuation of Nigerians.

Sleepless Nights 

The Federal Government of Nigeria has promised to do all it can to provide safety for Nigerians in Sudan.

A media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, reveals that the FG is in touch with Sudan and Ethiopian governments regarding the safety of Nigerians.

According to him, the situation has been giving the FG “sleepless nights”.

He tweeted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects to take Nigerians to safety.

“Nigerian government has been having sleepless nights following the ongoing crisis in Sudan,” Mr. Shehu says.

“Our officials are doing a lot, coordinating with the Embassy in Khartoum, the Sudanese and Ethiopian governments trying to ensure the safety of the large number of our citizens there

“Minister Geoffrey Onyeama who is coordinating these efforts is optimistic that they will start moving people to safety as soon as possible,” he adds.

On the other hand, the African Union has called on the warring parties to stop the fight and agree on a political solution.

The AU calls for an immediate ceasefire and political solution.
