Nigerian rapper Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington or “Akpi,” has been granted bail by the Nigeria Police Force.
The news was confirmed by his lawyer, Stanley Alieke, who shared the update on Instagram.
“Apki has been granted bail by the court,” Alieke wrote.
This brings relief to fans of the outspoken and controversial artist.
Also, Speed Darlington was apprehended on November 27 while performing at a show in Owerri, Imo State.
His arrest sent shockwaves through social media, with speculation surrounding the reasons behind it.
However, it was later revealed that the incident was linked to alleged verbal abuses directed at Grammy award-winning artist Damini Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy.
According to Deji Adeyanju, another member of Speed Darlington’s legal team, Burna Boy played a pivotal role in orchestrating the rapper’s arrest.
Furthermore, Deji Adeyanju accused Burna Boy of retaliating against Speed Darlington for comments suggesting an immoral relationship between Burna Boy and American music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs.
The claims come amid ongoing legal troubles for Diddy, who is facing multiple allegations of sexual exploitation and human trafficking in the United States.
Speed Darlington’s legal team, led by Adeyanju, had earlier filed a Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure (FREP) application.
He demands his immediate release or formal arraignment.
Deji Adeyanju took to social media to announce the court’s decision.
Also, he stated that: “Our FREP application for Speed Darlington a.k.a Akpi has been granted by the court”.
“He is to be arraigned within 48 hours or released. Issues around injustice may take time, but justice will always prevail“.
