Luke Shaw has been slammed for not “prioritising Manchester United”, with Peter Schmeichel reacting to the defender’s latest injury setback.
The 29-year-old finds himself back on the sidelines at the start of the 2024-25 campaign.
He did figure for England at this summer’s European Championship, helping them to another final before coming unstuck against Spain.
Shaw headed into that tournament nursing a knock that had kept him out of action since February.
He is unavailable to club boss Erik ten Hag once again, with six months having passed since his last appearance for United.
Red Devils legend Schmeichel has questioned why Shaw gambled on his fitness when linking up with England, telling BBC Radio 5 Live of seeing the injury-ravaged left-back return to the treatment table:
“Luke Shaw last played (for United) in February and yet he still went to the Euros.
“I think he played a little bit in the quarter final, and then some of the semi-final and then he played the final.
“Now, he’s injured again.
“He’s so important.
“He’s got experience and he’s a top class left back.
“Also, he’s a Manchester United player – we pay him.
“He should be focusing and prioritising Manchester United and not his country.”

Shaw sat out over 30 games for United last season and has dealt with a number of fitness problems during his time at Old Trafford – including a broken leg and various muscle complaints.
United have drafted in Noussair Mazraoui this summer, meaning that Diogo Dalot could be shifted from right-back to provide cover on the left.
