Shakira has addressed her decision to settle her $15 million Spanish tax case, clarifying that her choice was made to protect her children, not due to guilt.
In a letter, she stated that authorities unfairly targeted her, accusing them of using her case to improve their image by “burning [her] at the stake.”
The Colombian singer, who paid a $7.5 million fine in 2023 to avoid an eight-year prison sentence, has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
She claimed Spanish tax authorities falsely accused her of owing back taxes from 2012 to 2014, despite officially becoming a tax resident in 2015.
Shakira explained that her time in Spain before 2015 was spent supporting her then-partner, Gerard Piqué, but she was not a resident during the years in question.
She argued that the tax authorities fabricated the case, seeking “hunting trophies” to boost their credibility.
Despite paying the fine, Shakira maintains that she always fulfilled her tax obligations and insists her settlement was made to protect her family and move forward peacefully.
