A shocking scandal has rocked Equatorial Guinea’s political establishment, as over 400 explicit videos involving high-ranking officials and their families were uncovered, sparking commotion across the nation.
Amid the scandal , Equatorial Guinea’s President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has appointed Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo as the new Director General of the National Agency for Financial Investigation (ANIF).
This decision follows the dismissal of Baltasar Engonga, who had previously held the position.

Engonga removal from office comes after a shocking scandal involving a series of explicit videos that implicated public officials.
According to a report from the local media outlet ,AhoraEG, the President’s decision to fire Engonga was also based on “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions, as well as inappropriate family and social conduct for the performance of public functions.”
These reasons were officially outlined in Decree number 118/2024, issued on November 4.
Investigation of Baltasar Ebang
Engonga’s arrest followed allegations that he had filmed over 400 explicit videos involving prominent women in the country.
These women reportedly included the wives of high-ranking officials, ministers, and even the President’s sister.
The videos were uncovered during an impromptu search of Engonga’s office by ANIF officials, who were initially investigating financial irregularities.
The discovery of these videos has caused an uproar in Equatorial Guinea.
The tapes, which were allegedly recorded with the women’s consent, were later leaked online, triggering widespread public outrage.
Equatorial Guinea Government’s Response
In response to the scandal, the government has implemented strict measures to address misconduct.

These include suspending officials found guilty of similar ethical violations.
Additionally, the government has installed surveillance cameras in public offices to prevent further incidents of misconduct.
The New Appointment
Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo, the newly appointed Director General, is well-qualified for the role.
He holds a law degree from the National University of Equatorial Guinea (UNGE).
His professional background includes various leadership positions, such as Magistrate Judge at the Institution of Malabo, Director General of Contract Studies and State Markets at the Ministry of Finance and Budgets, and Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance, Economy, and Planning.
He has also served as Secretary General of Mines, Industry, and Energy, according to AhoraEG.
This change in leadership marks a significant shift in Equatorial Guinea’s financial oversight, as the government works to regain public trust and address the issues of corruption and misconduct among its officials.
