Plymouth have won only five of the 20 matches they have played since the Manchester United and England legend was put in charge in the summer.

The Championship side have taken just two points from their last four matches, conceding 13 goals in that time, resulting in calls for Rooney to be sacked just a few months into his three-year contract.

Plymouth’s owner has insisted Rooney will not be sacked any time soon and Lennon is backing him to stay where he is.

However, the former Celtic manager believes following in the footsteps of his old England team-mate Steven Gerrard by taking a job up north may be an option in the future.

“Wayne Rooney managing in Scotland? Never say never.

“He looks determined to be a successful manager and he’s digging in at Plymouth, they just have that inconsistency in playing at home and away from home at the moment and that’s where they have been struggling,” he told Boyle Sports.

“He has plenty to concentrate down there before thinking about his next job, but who knows what will happen in the future.”

The 39-year-old is in dire need of a win when his team take on Oxford in the Championship on Saturday.

Plymouth are two points above the relegation zone and one point worse off than their weekend opponents.
