This is the biggest individual award in African football and the Nigerian forward put a stop to the dominance by Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

His compatriot Asisat Oshoala won the Woman’s Best Player of the Year while Morocco’s Walid Regragui was named Coach of the Year.

On the other hand, Nigerian star Chiamaka Nnadozie was selected as the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year.

Morocco’s Yassine Bounou was named Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year.

Osimhen has set a bar for himself to be further recognised in the upcoming years.

However, his talents could see him getting signed by Premier League clubs or European giants.

So much is expected from him at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals to uplift an underperforming Nigeria team.

However, Osimhen becomes the sixth Nigerian to win the African Footballer of the Year award and interestingly, legend Austin Jay Jay Okocha never won it.

December is a serious month for Osimhen as he seeks to rediscover his scoring form.

He also has an ambition and that could see him playing for a bigger European club next term.

Kanu Nwankwo won the award last for Nigeria in 1999.
