British acting legend, Dame Maggie Smith, has passed away at the age of 89.
The iconic actress died peacefully in hospital on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, confirmed in a statement.
“It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith,” the statement read.
“She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday, September 27.”
Born Margaret Natalie Smith in Ilford, Essex, on December 28, 1934.
Dame Maggie grew up in Oxford, where she discovered her passion for acting as a teenager.
Her illustrious career spanned more than six decades, making her one of Britain’s most beloved and accomplished actresses.
Also, she began her acting journey on the stage.
She gained recognition in the 1950s before transitioning to film and television.

Dame Maggie won two Academy Awards during her career, the first for Best Actress for her role in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1969.
Also, the second for Best Supporting Actress in California Suite in 1978.
