The National Identity Card Management Commission (NIMC) says the card will now serve as both an ID and a payment tool, enabling ATM withdrawals and online transactions.
NIMC officials announced that it integrates with Nigeria’s banking system, aiming to boost financial inclusion. The rollout is expected soon.
In a recent interview on Channels TV, NIMC officials Kayode Adegoke and Peter Iwegbu explained that the new card would enable Nigerians to make ATM withdrawals, online payments, and money transfers.
Furthermore, the card’s chip integrates seamlessly with Nigeria’s banking system, facilitating transactions across various banks.
Banks To Issue Cards
A key change from previous practices is the process for obtaining the card.
Unlike before, when individuals had to collect their NIN cards at NIMC offices, Adegoke revealed that banks would now issue the cards.

Additionally, banks and an online portal will manage applications, making the process more accessible for all Nigerians.
While the NIN itself remains free, Adegoke reassured Nigerians that the card’s enrolment or issuance would not charge anyone.
Furthermore, NIMC is collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS) to introduce the financial features of the card.
This initiative aims to include millions of previously underserved Nigerians in the formal banking system.
Also, the new system will allow Nigerians to choose where they collect their cards—either at bank branches or have them delivered to their homes.
Ultimately, the NIMC expects to roll out the card soon, aiming to tackle issues of financial exclusion and enhance access to banking services.
If you already have your card, you will surely need to get a new NIN card to get this new feature.
