After Nigeria gained independence on October 1, 1960, one of the earliest and most notable songs that captured the spirit of the newly independent nation was “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
The lyrics was written by Lillian Jean Williams, while Frances Berda composed the music for “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”.
It was officially adopted as the national anthem of Nigeria in 1960.
It was later replaced by the current national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” in 1978.
“Nigeria, We Hail Thee” played a significant role in symbolising the pride and hope of the Nigerian people during the early years of independence.
For all the Gen Zs out there, here is what the Nigerian first anthem sounds like.
